Overexploitation
Affecting the California Red-Legged Frog

One of the major reasons the bullfrog was introduced to California in 1896 (Jennings and Hayes 1985) was because the California Red-Legged Frog was harvested for human consumption during the Gold Rush in California. Miners found the California Red-Legged Frog to be a good source of protein and soon they noticed that the population of native frog was growing low. So, someone thought that they could introduce the bullfrog to replace the native population of frog. Unfortunately, they were unaware that the bullfrog would prey on the California Red-Legged Frog. The frog was also sold as pets to out of state consumers.
