Migration
of the California Red-Legged Frog

During the warmer months the California Red-Legged Frogs live in Estivation habitats. Estivation habitat is essential for the survival of California Red-Legged Frogs within a watershed (61 Federal Register 25814). California Red-Legged Frogs estivate in small mammal burrows and moist leaf litter (61 Federal Register 25813). To maintain a consistent body temperature California Red-Legged Frogs (especially juveniles) will bask during the day and sleep in the small mammal burrows at night.

Since the California Red-Legged Frog prefers to live in a “wet” area with a warm climate that does not produce extreme drought, they will migrate by season to aquatic and riparian habitats that will provide them with enough moisture during the dry season.
